India is the land of Bollywood. People here are crazy for movie. Here in India, we select a star and then treat him like our god. Theatre becomes our temple and Friday becomes the holy day. 

Now, have you ever wondered why Friday becomes our holy day? In other words, why does a Bollywood movie has to release on Friday?

Now there are various beliefs regarding this subject. One of them says that we started copying the Hollywood way of releasing the movies.

The concept of releasing the movie on Fridays comes from Hollywood with their acclaimed movie Gone With The Wind being released on 15th December, 1939. But this is not entirely the case.

Movies in India didn't release on Friday until late 1950's. If we talk about iconic Bollywood movies, Neel Kamal released on 24th March, 1947, which was a Monday. Mughal-E-Azam was among the first movies to be released on 5th August, 1960, a Friday.

Another very important point is that back in time, there were no coloured televisions. Therefore, they released movies on Friday to make up for half-days on Fridays owing to informal norms in small scale industries in Mumbai and around the country.

And finally, monetary factor plays a very important role in Friday being the D-Day. Friday is considered as the day of goddess Lakshmi in India. So it is considered lucky.

And, The screening fee that producers have to pay to multiplex owners is higher for days other than Friday and so Friday suits the best.
